“One of the key things Mark’s done is to create my company’s advisory board model. We use that model all the time, and most of the important decisions we make happen as a result of it.”

Mark Lefko is the founder and CEO of the Lefko Group — a corporate retreat and facilitation company in Agoura Hills, California.

Business Background

Mark’s hardcore business background is extensive. He spent seven years as a CPA with Arthur Andersen, four years as CFO of a $6 billion mortgage company, nine years as an investment banker, and two years as a Chairman at TEC Worldwide (now Vistage, the international CEO membership organization). Currently, he serves on four advisory boards.

The Lefko Group

In 1996, he started his consulting group (then called “Tegra Capital Associates”), which handled Mergers & Acquisitions for corporations. In 2001, he switched the group’s focus and began staging retreats.

Why the change?

Says Mark: “From my M & A work, I saw that the corporations with the highest market value always had senior teams that collaborated, and spent a lot of time on their future direction.

“The corporations whose value was lower acted more as individuals, less as a team, and were too busy putting out today’s fires to worry about tomorrow’s direction.

“I saw retreats as a way to get everyone on the same page, so they could move forward with power.”

Since making that decision, Mark has created over 80 retreats, and coached over a hundred CEOs and Presidents on how to get the most out of their strategy and people.

Speaker

Besides holding retreats, Mark is a speaker. He has spoken at the National Association of Women Business Owners’ University about creating business alliances, as well as to numerous CEO groups about building advisory boards.

Teacher

He is also a teacher, serving as a visiting faculty member at the Business School for Entrepreneurs in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where he taught business owners how to increase their company’s market value.

Life

When he’s not working, Mark spends time with his family, runs marathons (he’s finished nine, including one ultra-marathon), hikes, cycles, spins, works out at the gym and practices yoga and Qi Gong.
